How to Prepare a Phone Before Selling It (Step-by-Step)
Skipping these eight steps can cost you money — or leak your personal data. Use this checklist before any sale or trade-in.
Why prep matters more than people think
A clean, properly-reset phone is worth more, sells faster, and protects you legally. Most buyer disputes — "the device was locked", "I lost data" — trace back to skipped prep steps. Here's the eight-step process every Chicago seller should run before handing over a phone.
Step 1 — Back up everything
iPhone: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Confirm the date stamp before continuing.
Android: Settings → Google → Backup → Back up now. For Samsung devices, also use Smart Switch.
Don't trust auto-backups from a week ago. Force a fresh backup.
Step 2 — Sign out of every account
Email, messaging apps, banking apps, password managers, two-factor apps. Removing the SIM doesn't kill these sessions.
- iMessage / FaceTime / Apple ID (iPhone)
- Google account (Android)
- Banking, Venmo, Cash App, Authenticator apps
- Samsung account if applicable
Step 3 — Disable activation locks
- iPhone: Find My iPhone OFF before reset
- Android: Remove Google account before reset (otherwise Factory Reset Protection kicks in)
- Samsung: Also remove Samsung account
A locked device can lose 80% of its value or be outright rejected.
Step 4 — Encrypt, then factory reset
Modern iPhones are encrypted by default. For older Androids, enable encryption in Settings → Security before resetting. Then run a full factory reset from Settings → General → Reset (iOS) or Settings → System → Reset (Android).
Step 5 — Remove the SIM and SD card
The SIM is yours. Pop it out and either move it to your next phone or destroy it. Same with any microSD card — those store more personal data than people realize.
Step 6 — Clean the device
A microfiber cloth and a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol on a separate cloth (not directly on the device) is all you need. Avoid sprays. Clean:
- Screen and back glass
- Charging port (a wooden toothpick works for lint)
- Camera lenses
- Speaker grilles
Cosmetic condition often moves the offer by $20–50.
Step 7 — Document the condition
Photograph all six sides under bright, even light. Record a 30-second video that shows the device powering on, the home screen, and any blemishes. This is your insurance against "it arrived damaged" disputes.
Step 8 — Gather accessories and original packaging
Even small items add value:
- Original box and inserts
- Unused or lightly-used cable and brick
- SIM ejector tool
- Earbuds (if originally included)
A complete kit can bump your final price by $15–60 depending on the model.
Final test before handing it over
Power on, confirm it boots to the "Hello / Welcome" setup screen, and hand it over with both physical and digital condition documentation. You've now eliminated the most common reasons a buyer reduces an offer.
